City Life

Drove into the city.  Saw a sign.
It said, "Welcome to LA.
Population: We don't know -
Too many people here today.
Tried to count 'em, but they all
Took up arms to fight their wars.
So many people, so many guns,
Don't know what they're shootin' for.

Can't figure 'em out.
They're runnin' about.
With a scream and a shout
Soon the world has died out."

Traded in a ten for two ones
And a six-pack of beer.
I walked outside.  Another sign,
Sayin', "Cash needed here."
The man who held it had no teeth,
But he smiled anyway.
Gave him my ones.  Gave me a blessing.
Me, oh, my, oh, what a day.

Can't figure it out.
I'm running about.
With a scream and a shout
Soon the world has died out.

What do I do?
Where are we goin' now?
Society's dyin' on me.
Someday maybe we'll figure out how,
How we could've helped,
But it'll all come too late.
We always figure out tomorrow
What we needed yesterday.

Here I end my story.  I got drunk
And I crawled into bed
While visions of sugarplums
Danced in my head.
I fell asleep and I dreamt
Of easy days once more -
The days where no one had to ask
What they were livin' for.

They figured it out.
Knew what life's about.
There was no need to shout
'Cause the world had died out.
