To My Daughter

You don't know.  You don't know how hard it is to be a mother.
You don't know.  You will not know 'til you're suddenly forced into it.
You don't know.  You don't know how hard it is to raise another,
Yes another little girl, who's every little bit
What you were.  What you were.

And you can see it in her eyes,
That she's just as bold and just as daring,
And no matter how she tries,
She can't stop you from really caring,
And she says she needs her space,
So you hold her just a little tighter,
Because when you had her face,
You recall being a fighter
Of the rules.  All the rules.

And you'll learn.  And you'll learn about unicorns and acrobats.
And you'll learn.  And you'll learn about shattered vases, too.
And you'll learn.  And you'll learn that you have to give her hell for that,
'Cause I learned it all the hard way, and next it's up to you
To take charge.  To take charge.

And you'll know.  And you'll know that everything I've said is true.
And you'll know.  You'll really know what your own mother was like.
And you'll know.  And you'll know that this other version of you
Will someday wear your wedding dress, just like she rode your bike.
And you'll cry.  And you'll cry.

And you'll think that you can change,
But the future has been set in stone,
And at first it may seem strange,
But don't worry - you're not alone -
And that's not for a while.
For now it's just to understand
Why I cry when I smile
As I hold onto your tiny hand.
I love you.  I love you.

You don't know.  You don't know how hard it is to be a mother.
You don't know.  You will not know 'til you're one of them yourself.
You don't know.  You don't know how much you need to love her
'Til your daughter looks at you, and you can see that she's an elf,
Just like you.  Just like you.
Just like you, and like me, too.
I love you.
